Laskarina

I decided to give this creation the name ‘Laskarina’, in memory of Laskarina Bouboulina, the Greek naval commander, the heroine of the Greek War of Independence in 1821, who became the first woman to attain the rank of admiral.

Ιnspired by the “Kiousteki”, an ornament for the chest that accompanied the Greek traditional costume in the 19th and 20th centuries, ‘Laskarina’ narrates the story of the many struggles of women. The struggles for life, equality and freedom can be traced from the Age of Enlightenment, to the revolution of the Iranian women in our days.

Day by day, the piece was evolving in my hands. It began with just two pieces of plastic found on a beach, which consisted the main body, and gradually became covered with layers of memories of bygone struggles. A wearable garden, sown with defeats and victories experienced along the path of life.

‘Laskarina’ is an ode to female nature, a shield of protection for the modern woman, who with love, cares and embraces those around her, and at the same moment finds the strength to defend her values with boundless courage.

Θέλησα να δώσω σε αυτή την δημιουργία το όνομα ‘Λασκαρίνα’, στην μνήμη της Λασκαρίνας Μπουμπουλίνας, της Ελληνίδας ηρωίδας της Ελληνικής επανάστασης του 1821, που με την σημαντική προσφορά της στον αγώνα των Ελλήνων κατάφερε να γίνει η έγινε η πρώτη γυναίκα που έλαβε βαθμό ναυάρχου.

Με έμπνευση από το ‘Κιουστέκι’, τον τύπο κοσμήματος στήθους που συνόδευε τις Ελληνικές παραδοσιακές ενδυμασίες του 19ου και 20ου αιώνα, η ‘Λασκαρίνα’ αφηγείται την ιστορία των γυναικείων αγώνων. Αγώνων για ζωή, ισότητα και ελευθερία στους οποίους μπορεί να ανατρέξει κανείς από την εποχή του Διαφωτισμού, μέχρι την επανάσταση των γυναικών του Ιράν στις μέρες μας.

Μέρα με τη μέρα, το κόσμημα στα χέρια μου άλλαζε μορφή. Ξεκίνησε από δύο κομμάτια πλαστικού που βρέθηκαν στην παραλία, τα οποία αποτέλεσαν τον βασικό σκελετό, και σιγά-σιγά κατέληξε να καλυφθεί από στρώσεις μνήμης. Ένας φορέσιμος κήπος, φυτεμένος με ήττες και νίκες στην πορεία της ζωής.

Η ‘Λασκαρίνα’ αποτελεί ωδή στην γυναικεία φύση, ασπίδα για την σύγχρονη γυναίκα που φροντίζει και αγκαλιάζει με αγάπη τον κόσμο γύρω της, και την ίδια στιγμή βρίσκει την δύναμη να υπερασπίζεται με θάρρος τις αξίες της.

I was born in Athens in 1996.

The years of my childhood were pleasant and calm.

I can remember a pavement outside my home, where I would play all the time.

On finishing school, I registered to attend a vocational high school, so that I could follow a specialization in Microbiology. I finally managed.

For the last few months, I have been doing my internship at Agios Savvas Hospital. Gratis.

For me to manage economically, I work in a cafeteria in the afternoon and some evenings, I work at a bar in Exarcheia. Despite the fact that this job is in the evening, I really do enjoy it; it relaxes me.

One evening, as I was returning home from a night out, I was attacked by a man. I was petrified. The point is though, how I found myself feeling guilty about what had happened at that specific moment. That is, I was the one who caused this to happen. Day by day I do work hard on myself, so I have succeeded in becoming stronger. On the other hand, I do not wish for such an incident to happen in my life to make me bolder.

In the future, I desire all women to be free. To be liberated once and for all from the burden others have placed upon us.

As for me, I hope along my life’s path, I will find my own way, without being overwhelmed by stress to accomplish grand plans. It is enough for me to feel calm and content from time to time.

Γεννήθηκα στην Αθήνα το 1996.

Τα παιδικά μου χρόνια ήταν ωραία και ήσυχα.

Θυμάμαι έναν πεζόδρομο έξω από το σπίτι μου, που έπαιζα εκεί όλη την ώρα.

Τελείωσα το σχολείο και γράφτηκα σε νυχτερινό ΕΠΑΛ, ώστε να μπορέσω να ακολουθήσω την ειδικότητα της μικροβιολογίας. Τα κατάφερα τελικά.

Τους τελευταίους μήνες κάνω την πρακτική μου στον Άγιο Σάββα. Αμισθί.

Για να μπορέσω να ανταπεξέλθω οικονομικά, τα απογεύματα εργάζομαι σε ένα καφέ και μερικά βράδια δουλεύω σε ένα bar στα Εξάρχεια. Αυτή η δουλειά, αν και νυχτερινή, μου αρέσει πάρα πολύ, με ξεκουράζει.

Ένα βράδυ γυρίζοντας από διασκέδαση στο σπίτι, δέχθηκα επίθεση από έναν άνδρα. Φοβήθηκα πολύ. Το θέμα όμως είναι πως εκείνη την στιγμή έπιασα τον εαυτό μου να νοιώθω ένοχη γι’ αυτό που μου συνέβη. Δηλαδή, πως εγώ το προκάλεσα να συμβεί. Μέσα μου το δουλεύω πολύ και μέρα με τη μέρα έχω κατορθώσει να γίνομαι πιο δυνατή. Από την άλλη πλευρά, δεν θέλω να συμβαίνουν τέτοιου είδους γεγονότα στη ζωή μου για να δυναμώσω.

Στο μέλλον εύχομαι όλες οι γυναίκες να μπορούμε να είμαστε ελεύθερες. Να απαλλαγούμε τελειωτικά από τα βάρη που οι άλλοι μας έχουν φορέσει.

Όσο για μένα την ίδια, ελπίζω στην πορεία της ζωής μου να βρω τον δικό μου δρόμο, χωρίς να με κυριεύει καθημερινά το άγχος να φέρω εις πέρας μεγαλεπήβολα σχέδια. Μου αρκεί να μπορώ κάποιες στιγμές να νοιώθω ήρεμη κι ευτυχισμένη…

To create a piece of jewelry, the inspiration comes more often than not from the visual arts in general, film, poetry, travel, as well as my visits to museums around the world.

This time, the journey was reversed. ‘Laskarina’, a contemporary piece of jewelry inspired by the chest ornament we encounter in the traditional costumes of the 19th and 20th centuries was presented for the first time at the Ilias Lalaounis Jewelry Museum in June 2023. Following this, the group exhibition, 'History of Revolutions', traveled to America to converse with other American artists as part of NYC Jewelry Week, serving as a starting point to create a series of wall-mounted jewels made with the collage/assemblage technique, narrating the story of the many women's struggles. These struggles for life, equality and freedom can be traced back from the Age of Enlightenment to the revolution of the Iranian women of our times.

Highlighting the symbol of femininity, symbols of expression and speech, the uterus as the epicenter of the female body, the gestation of both life and ideas, the liberation of the female body, the series of wall-mounted jewels ‘WomanHood’ is an ode to female nature, who with love, cares and embraces those around her, and at the same moment finds the strength and fortitude to defend her values with boundless courage.
